Submit​ an Abstract

This page contains important information about the different types of abstract you can submit, and how it should be formatted. Please read carefully.

To enable as many delegates as possible to share their work at QRSE2020, we are restricting abstract submissions to one per lead author. In this instance, the lead author is the person who intends to present the work.

1. Traditional Oral Paper Presentation

These are individual papers that report on well-developed research. 

What should I include in my abstract?: For empirical papers, abstracts should be structured using the following sub-headings: 

  • Objectives 
  • Methods 
  • Findings and Discussion 
  • Conclusions

For conceptual and / or performance papers, abstracts should clearly state an aim, justification and implications (i.e. What are you proposing / considering in this presentation? Why is it important? What might be an outcome or consequence of what you’re suggesting?)

Abstract length: 250 words (max.).

2. Symposia Sessions

We particularly welcome symposia that include diverse groups of speakers (e.g. career stage, gender, academic/non-academic, geographical spread). Potential convenors may wish to circulate calls for interest around their chosen topic via networks, special interest groups, social media (please tag @QRSE2020) etc. to aid in this process. 

Symposia sessions may adopt one of the following formats:

(a) Completed paper presentation session:

These sessions are pre-constituted, involving 4 – 5 already selected papers that fit with the session topic. These sessions can also include a commentator, who should be listed in the session proposal. 

What should I include in my abstract?: Your abstract should provide a context for the session topic, its aims, and a justification. You must include the abstracts for all of the individual papers that will be presented in the session (please refer to the formats specified above) along with commentary on how these papers will connect and complement each other in relation to the overarching session topic.

Abstract length: 750 words (max.)

(b) Panel session

These sessions focus on a specific theme to be addressed by a panel of discussants. 

What should I include in my abstract?: Your abstract should introduce the session theme; explaining what it is, why it’s important and what will be gained from the panel discussion? What key questions will be addressed? Who are the other panel members and what do they bring to the discussion? 

Abstract length: 750 words (max.)

(c) Roundtable session

These sessions can include less developed, preliminary or exploratory research. These sessions can include 4 – 5 presenters for 5 minute introductions of research, followed by discussion among those presenting and conference attendees who join the roundtable.

What should I include in my abstract?: Your abstract should introduce the topic for discussion. Why is it important? Why now? Who are the other panel members and what do they bring to the discussion? What are the key questions (by panel members, the audience) and what do you hope to gain from considering them in this format? 

Abstract length: 750 words (max.).

3. “Poster 2.0”

Posters at QRSE2020 should followed the new format, coined as “Poster 2.0”. Everything that you need to know about the Poster 2.0 format can be found within this online video (note – we are not insisting on the use of prescribed colour coding for different study types).

What should I include in my abstract? Poster abstracts should be structured using the following sub-headings: 

  • Objectives 
  • Methods 
  • Findings and Discussion 
  • Conclusions

Abstract length: 250 words (max.).

Note: We will be awarding a prize for the best poster. Please indicate on the abstract submission form whether you would like your poster to be entered into this competition.

4. Arts Based/Visual Methods Exhibits or Performances

In the first instance, please contact the conference committee ahead of submitting an abstract to discuss the feasibility of your requirements.

If you proceed with a submission, abstracts should include details of the research along with information on how it will be represented, including a full justification for this choice.

Abstract length: 500 words (max.)

And finally…

We welcome creative ways of sharing research. Should your abstract to present your work be accepted, you might like to consider different ways of using your allotted time. For example, some presenters may wish to use the Petcha Kutcha method, others may wish to shorten their presentation and pose challenging questions to the audience based on the ideas they have discussed. Use the conference to stimulate discussion about your research interests and their wider application, encourage debate, and aspire to gain feedback in ways that will be useful to you going forward.
